Nancy Chockley – What we found is that over the last 12 years, that there’s really been a shift in the type of new drugs being approved by the FDA. And that we found that most of the growth was really in drugs that did not show any significant clinical improvement.

Peter Jennings – Eighty percent of the drugs which the FDA approves are not significantly different from the ones on the market already, and only 20 percent of the drugs are significantly new. Do you think the public even knows that? …We’re spending more on prescription drugs than we did in 1995. And the majority of the drugs approved by the FDA are simply modifications of old drugs…Consumers spend billion more on prescription drugs last year than was spent just six years ago. And are we billion healthier? …But what critics call this ‘gaming of the system’ may have a much more damaging result.

Dr. Sharon Levine, Kaiser Permanente Medical Group – If I’m a manufacturer, and I can change one molecule and get another 20 years of patent life and convince physicians to prescribe and consumers to demand … then why would I be spending money on a lot less certain endeavor, which is looking for brand new drugs?

Peter Jennings – The pharmaceutical industry has more registered lobbyists than the number of senators and congressmen combined.

Dr. Jerry Avorn, Brigham and Women’s Hospital – I think there’s a sense that, for example, when the FDA approves a drug, everything that needs to be known about it is known. I think patients believe that. I think doctors sometimes believe that. And that is not true.

Peter Jennings – How do you explain the overwhelming success of these drugs in a very short period of time?

Dr. Sharon Levine – I think the only explanation is the amount of money, the amount of time and energy that was put into promoting these drugs to doctors and advertising these drugs to consumers.

Peter Jennings – You see television ads like this all the time, including many on ABC News programs. They are part of the drug industry’s billion effort to get you to ask for particular drugs and to get doctors to prescribe those particular drugs. …The drug companies spend vast amounts of money – nearly billion selling to consumers, billion marketing to doctors, billion worth of free samples. …Doesn’t it make sense for the drug companies to at least educate the doctors about the prescription drugs that are available?

Dr. Marcia Angell – Well, that’s not their business, education. Drug companies are not in the education business. Medical schools and teaching hospitals are. It’s like expecting beer companies to educate people about alcoholism. It is not what they do.

Dr. Matt Handley, Group Health Cooperative – It’s almost like a trade. You might not have the stomach problem, but the studies suggest you might, instead, be equally likely to have a more serious heart problem. …I would personally wait years for long-term safety from the FDA’s monitoring program before I’d consider taking them. If they were free, I would do that same thing.

Peter Jennings – What does this say about the social responsibility of the pharmaceutical industry? Or is the pharmaceutical industry supposed to have a social responsibility?

Dr. Sharon Levine – That’s a very good question that the American people need to answer, do we want to entrust critical elements of the public health to an industry whose purpose, whose mission is to earn return for shareholders?

Peter Jennings – Congress has never required the FDA to routinely compare new drugs with older drugs. This is costing consumers billions of dollars that we do not need to spend. And in some cases, it could be costing lives. …There is no law that says new drugs have to be proven 100 percent safe. … The government says they must be relatively safe, which means that every drug comes with risks. And the result of that is that sometimes new drugs turn out to be more dangerous than old drugs.

Dr. Jerry Avorn, Harvard Medical School – If patients were aware of the limitations that all of us physicians have in terms of what we know and what we wish we know and what we don’t know, they would be more scared than they are at present. …The saying that a lot of doctors use sometimes in jest is, ‘Always wait a year before prescribing a new drug. And if it’s for a family member, wait five years.’ And that’s an awful thing to say, but it reveals a perception that we really don’t know as much as we would like to know about a drug until it’s been around.

Peter Jennings – The fact is, drugs can be used for years before we really know how safe they are. …Dr. Drummond Rennie is an editor at The Journal of the American Medical Association. He says researchers who are critical get attacked all the time. Why do you think the industry is able to get away with what you have in the past called ‘bullying tactics?’

Dr. Drummond Rennie, Journal of the American Medical Association – Money. Because if the shareholders are happy, whom else do they have to answer for? These are multinationals. They have no masters.

Peter Jennings – Can we trust studies funded by companies that have a vested interest in the results? …Will the pharmaceutical industry do whatever it takes to get the results it wants from research?

Dr. Drummond Rennie – The temptation to spin those results is always there, and it’s frequently used. Frequently.

Peter Jennings – For nearly every drug on the market, doctors must wrestle with conFL icting and sometimes inaccurate information.

Dr. Drummond Rennie – If only the good news about a drug is published, and never the bad news, then a false impression is given of the quality, effectiveness of that drug. It may be entirely false.

Peter Jennings – Does the drug industry, on occasion or regularly, suppress data?

Dr. Drummond Rennie – Oh, we suspect, and rather know, that this happens all the time.

Peter Jennings – Does the drug industry ever suspend a trial – a drug trial – because it believes the results will be different than it wishes?

Dr. Drummond Rennie – Yes, that’s happened.

Peter Jennings – Does a drug company ever not publish the results of a trial because it doesn’t like the results?

Dr. Drummond Rennie – Yes.

All the talking heads on national radio, television are ALL, to a certain extend are indirectly responsible for the AZ massacre and all are fast to say no, they are for nothing in this tragedy. Common sense dictates being so vitriolic will not only affect deranged people but ALL the people listening to these shows at a certain degree.

For years on national radio with George Noory I cried out loud my vision begging him to be more cautious with his guests constantly regurgitating their own religious or imaginative fears. Once more I do not know anyone of the millions of his listeners who would not remember me telling the world to “STOP feeding evil”. As much as the toxic political environment cause this, “accident” so are the abortion doctors killed by religious fanatics thinking of liberating this world from evil. Yes ALL apocalyptic and conspiracy promoters are responsible because, without Cosmic Consciousness none of them know the impact they have on the human fragile psyche and most of all the very reason for them to behave like idiotic robots of their own stars. Without supreme wisdom there is no chance to auto analyze oneself accurately and regardless of the material presented, the promoter himself is indeed very sick. I guess we can only thank Mrs. Cleo and Sylvia Browne for their public performances. Chances are also for Kelly to use the jargonized modern astrology approach to even mention any form of planet shifting. Yes the Sun has also shifted a few degrees and comes the year 2012 we will all die, does this make sense?

Yes to those born with a lack of Comic Consciousness or depraved of objectivity. In this case, critical thinking is not applied in the right direction and the information used are rotten at the source because they are not dealing with truly gifted people that simply knows better and have an accumulation of unarguable “predicted”documentation … Where is the noted astrologer Kelly Fox’s material that could prove her case and wake those young souls up to a reality they can yet conceive?

DT Rebuttal: The ancients astrologers knew how difficult it would be for any “normal” human being to deal with the mystical aspect of the zodiac then that THEY only could grasp, thus putting aside does not mean “ejected” but used only by those whom the symbol and deep mystical meaning could be translated in the forecast. INTRODUCTION: 

A large number of studies have shown that even today approximately 70% of Indian Population lives in Rural Areas. Today, Rural Development is essential for the development of the Indian Economy. Indian Government has realized the role of the rural development and the contribution of I.T. in the development of Rural Markets. A large number of projects are introduced in the rural area with many upcoming projects in pipeline; which are likely to be introduced by the Government in the short span of time. Rural Literacy is ranked at the topmost position of priority. Trends indicate that rural markets are coming up in big way and growing twice as faster as urban markets. According to a study by NCAER (National Council for Applied Economic Research), the number of middle and high-income households in rural India is expected to grow from 80 Million to 111 Million by the end of year 2007 as compared to Urban India that is nearby 59 Million.  

The Rural Market of India is showing an impressive growth largely due to changing lifestyle patterns, better communication network and rapidly changing demand structure of consumers of rural area. With the changing patterns of Rural Market, the role of I.T. has increased from providing only the Networks to set-up the basis of updated technological programs in the rural area. It is seen that the people living in the rural area have strong purchasing power and have more openness for new technology as compared to the past. Evidence of the increase in purchasing power can be drawn from the statement of Mr. D. Shivakumar (Business Head – Personal Product Division, Hindustan Unilever Limited) who said that the money available for spending on the FMCG by Rural India is 63,500 Cr., which is much more as compared to Urban India that spends the amount of approximately 49,500 Cr.  

In Rural India, Government has already provided Info-kiosks (a rural version of cyber café) which provide basic communication facilities like internet connection and telecommunication services. Modern Information and Communication Technologies (ICT’s) were found to have great potential to contribute. The projects of Info- Kiosks are very popular in the region of Andra Pradesh, Delhi, Gujrat, Karnataka, Kerala, Maharashtra, Madya Pradesh, Rajasthan Tamil Nadu and Uttar Pradesh and have shown a positive response in the development of the rural area.   
 

Government is taking serious steps for the development of the rural market, under which the activities related to the development of the rural infrastructure, subsidized food availability and rural employment schemes are at the priority. I.T. plays a major role in accurate implementing these developmental programs in the rural area. Government has set up various centers which are spreading the I.T. web in the rural area through which people can be benefited and exploit the resources available efficiently.

I.T. AND RURAL DEVELOPMENT: 

I.T. has varied applications in it, through which the development of the rural area can be possible accurately. Government had introduced a number of programs through which the people of rural India can come forward and use the I.T. enabled services and work more systematically. Some of the programs run by the Government are: 

b E-Mitra:        

This service is launched by the RAJASTHAN Government for the first time for its rural citizens, so that they can deploy the I.T. enabled benefits to its fullest. E- Mitra is State Government started projects, which soon become highly popular in the region. In year 2002, two projects came into existence namely; Lok Mitra and Jan Mitra.       

Where Jan Mitra is an integrated electronic platform through which the citizens of Rajasthan can avail the benefit if getting the desired information regarding any Governmental Department at kiosks which is very near to there doorstep. These Initiative program of Rajasthan government have not only helped the Government by reducing the burden of attending every call, it has reduced the waiting time for the service and has lead to provide comfort to the citizens also, as with the inception of this service they can easily get the information required at their doorstep.      

Lok Mitra is an urban electronic Governance Project which was launched in Jaipur city in year 2002, which helps the citizens of Jaipur (now other cities also) to pay their bills online (land, Water, Bus Tickets and BSNL) leading the citizen to save the waiting time. This service also ensures people that their money is going directly to the Government and provides a feeling of security related to their bills payment. 

b Community Information Centers:       

The program is designed especially for providing the internet access and I.T. Enabled services to the citizens through which the interface between the Government and the Citizens can be setup. These centers connect seven northeast states namely; Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Manipur, Mehalaya, Mizoram, Nagaland and Tripura. The center helps to gain the connectivity at the time of unsuitable environmental conditions. The centers are commonly termed as CIC which are generally situated at the school, college or any governmental office. People can come for the Internet access, and for accessing the internet, a nominal amount is charged from the people through which the daily expenses of the centers are maintained.  

b wi-fi Projects:       

One of the wi-fi project under which few villages (of UTTAR PRADESH) are connected to internet is Digital Gangetic Plan (DGP). Through the use of DGP wireless network connectivity is created, this program helped the people residing in villages of India to have the access of internet through which the information on various issues can be collected ad used, at the same time the people living in rural India can be updated with the new technological changes and the innovative changes taking place in the national and the international markets. For instance; Bimari Jankari is a portal through which the information regarding every disease and health related issues is available and Digital Mandi is available as one of the portals where all the information regarding the agricultural commodities are available. This portal provides the information regarding the prices of the commodities and their relative value.  
 

b Drishtee:    

Drishtee is present in 5 States and is currently available in six districts. It is a private company, which was previously named as Cyber Edge, which has the main work of developing the modules. It is present in Bihar, Haryana, Madya Pradesh, Punjab and Rajasthan. It is generally suited in the Panchayat or in the bazaars. They prepare the module for the poor section of the society who cannot understand the international language. The modules are designed for the rural and semi-urban areas especially.  
 

b Gyandoot:      

It was established in January in year 2000. It is an e-governance based module designed for the rural citizens. The project was initially initiated by the Government of MADHYA PRADESH. Gyandoot caters the need of the villagers by providing the information related to the prevailing rates of the agro-based commodities and the rate of land. Each Gyandoot Info kiosks caters to approximately 15 panchayats and 30 villages. The module is designed with the aim to provide cost effective and sustainable delivery model to the people.  
 

b TARAhaat:     

It was developed by an NGO (non-government organization); with the vision to bring internet facility to the rural India. It is a franchisee based business model that attempts to generate revenues by focusing on the marketing services through the module (especial focus on the local applications). It was initiated in the region of PUNJAB with the introduction of different centers called as Kendra’s which are connected to each other through the dial up internet connection facility. These Kendra’s have power backup also; in case, the electricity supply is interrupted. The info kiosks provide online and offline services information on education, prevailing opportunities in the market and other useful information for the villagers. TARAkendra’s are very popular in between the local population as it provides the information in the local language and the portal is designed in such a pattern that semi literate population can also understand it without any difficulty. Different services that TARAkendra’s provide are:            

O TARABazar (for product information)            

O TARAdhaba (for providing connectivity)            

O TARAdak (connect to relatives at distance)            

O TARAgyan (educate rural youth on various issues)            

O TARAguru (helps in mentoring and consultancy)            

O TARAvan (delivery of orders at remote areas)

b Rural e-seva:     

It was initiated by ANDRA PRADESH Government. It was initially implemented in West Godavari District to deliver e-governance facility. The centers are designed with the view to provide better governance facilities to the people of the Rural India. The popularity of e-seva can be estimated from the fact that in the year 2003, more than 400 million rupees was collected only for the electricity payment. With the success of the e-seva in electricity bills payment, Government is looking forward for introducing it in the areas of collection of telephone bills and local Governmental Bills. E-seva is gaining popularity with passing days as it helps the citizens to avail the benefit of getting the certificates at their doorsteps; which is both relaxing and reliable. 

b Bhoomi:     

The KARNATAKA Government for maintaining the records related to the land introduced it. The Department of Revenue in Karnataka has computerized 20 million records of land ownership belonging to 6.7 million farmers of the state. With the introduction of the program, the farmers are free from giving the bribe and are protected from the harassment. Framers can easily get the Records of Rights, Tenancy and Crops (RTC) by depositing a minimal fee of Rs. 15.    

National Informatics Centers (NIC) through which the software online copies of the land records are available developed the software of Bhoomi. By giving an online request, farmers get an online enrollment number through which further processing can be done. In the software, the connectivity is through the LAN through which all the clients are connected to the hubs.   

With the increasing popularity of the project, Government of India has decided to introduce the project in other parts of the country also, namely: Kerala, West Bengal, Sikkim, Tripura, Punjab, Haryana, Madya Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh, Uttaranchal, Gujrat, Assam, Orrisa, Rajasthan and Pondicherry.

It is designed especially for the farmers of India. Through e-choupal, farmers who are living in the remote area of the country and cannot manage to have direct contact with the consumer can come forward to have a direct contact. It provides an e-procurement system through which the farmers can access the latest and updated information (local, national and international) related to different farming practices. It provides real time information and customized knowledge to the farmers through which the farmer can take better decisions and can have direct contact with the customer, reducing the amount wasted by moving through the distribution channel of intermediary.        

E-choupal has already become the largest initiative among all internet-based interventions in Rural India. E-choupal is present in 36,000 villages through nearly 6,000 kiosks across nine states. ITC (Indian Tobacco Company) is planning to expand the concept of e-choupal further in 15 states of India.  
  
  
  
  
 

b Aksh:      

  It is mostly active in Northern India, it is a fiber optic cable company with its core competence in lay down and maintenance if cable. Aksh has the license to lay down the cables in the rural areas. It initially has collaborated with Drishtee for maintenance of kiosks, but with the changing times; Drishtee and Aksh have separated in different service offerings. While Urban Area has witnessed a penetration of cable T.V., rural areas have left un-served. The fact behind the low level of cable T.V. proportion in rural as compared to urban area is due to the fact that in rural area there are a limited number of houses which can afford cable T.V. The bandwidth delivered by Aksh supports a large variety of services (including video interactions) which will lead to increase the level information exchange in between the people living in several areas of rural India. 

b n-Logue        

N-Logue is activated in South India and due to its advantages is entering into the northern areas. The main impetus came from IIT -Chennai. It is a non-profit organization with the responsibility of providing rural IT based services (including hardware and software) through connectivity and application all around the rural area. It is functional with WLL Technology whose construction and maintenance is costly and the connectivity is also limited to a certain area, but has the facility of providing connectivity with a range of services as it provides the voice call facility and overcome the problem of dial up connection errors. N-Logue is further supported by IIT-Chennai, which prepares a variety of local language software for it in short time for convenience and comfort. It has also added the facility of web-cam through which the remote diagnosis of various problems can be done. Tamil Nadu Government has supported the functions of n-Logue (especially in its Madurai and Nellikuppam district). N-Logue charges for connectivity and is relatively popular in the southern region due to its easy connectivity functioning and training of handling the applications.   
  
 

INCLINATION OF SECTORS TOWARDS RURAL INDIA:  
 

Income generation from Rural India has increased dramatically from past few years. Trends have witnessed twice growth rate of the rural market as compared to the urban markets. According to a McKinsey survey conducted in year 2007, Rural India, with a population of 627 million, (approximately 74.3 per cent of the total population), would become bigger than the total consumer market in countries such as South Korea or Canada in another twenty years. Moreover, it would grow almost four times from its existing size in 2007, which was estimated at US$ 577 billion. Several sectors are showing their inclination towards the rural market area due to the increased possibility of opportunities.   
  
  
  
  
 

1. FMCG

According to Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI), the number of rural households using fast moving consumer goods (FMCG) products has grown from 136 million in 2004 to 143 million in 2007.

In a report by market research firm AC Nielsen, in April-May 2008, it was observed that rural market has shown a rapid rate of growth. The FMCG sector in rural areas is projected to grow by 40 per cent against the 25 per cent growth in urban areas.   
 

2. Insurance

According to a report, ‘Insurance in Next 2 Years’, by The Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry of India (ASSOCHAM), in May 2008, the insurance sector size was estimated at US$ 12.8 billion, and it is likely to see an unprecedented growth of 200 per cent, touching US$ 51.2 billion by 2009-10. Rural India may offer a business opportunity worth US$ 23 billion for the insurance companies if the segment can be wooed with innovative saving schemes at affordable premiums 

3. Retail

According to a study, conducted in September 2007, by Confederation of Indian Industry (CII) on the Indian rural retail sector, opportunities in Rural Retail were estimated to be over US$ 34 billion in year 2007. This figure is expected to touch US$ 43 billion in 2010 and go up to US$ 58 billion by 2015. The rural markets in 2008 have grown at 25 per cent compared to the 7-10 per cent growth rate of the urban consumer retail market.  

4. Automobiles

The Indian Automotive Industry currently has a turnover of US$ 34 billion. However, the automobile market remains untapped in rural India that has a strong purchasing power. Nearly 50 per cent of the Indian rural market, which includes 220 million households, is potential car buyers. Two-wheeler penetration in rural belts is still very low with less than 10 per cent households owning a two-wheeler. 

5. Pharmaceuticals

The Indian Pharmaceuticals Market is regarded as one of the fastest growing in the world. In 2006-07, this market was valued at over US$ 7 billion with the rural segment having a remarkable share of this market. Industry estimates observed that while small towns contribute 20 per cent to the country’s pharmaceuticals market, rural areas account for 21 per cent. In 2006-07, the rural Indian market was estimated at around US$ 1.4 billion, having grown at about 40 per cent in 2006-07 against 21 per cent in the previous year.  

6. Consumer durables

A survey carried out by the Federation of Indian Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FICCI), indicated that the consumer durable goods sector is all set to witness 12 per cent growth in 2008. The rural market is growing faster than the urban markets, although the penetration level in rural area is much lower. The rural Indian market, which accounts for nearly 70 per cent of the total number of households, witnessed a 25 per cent annual growth while the urban consumer durables market reflected an annual rate of 7 to 10 per cent.

CONCLUSION: 

The face of Indian rural market can be transformed only with the deployment of I.T. The paper has provided the brief description of the various services offered in the rural areas of different states of India and simultaneously the advantages these services have. All the services have difference in degree of connectivity, level of service offered and basic organizational structure. It is clearly seen that the range of I.T. enabled service proportion is increasing at a rapid rate in the rural areas of India. The fact behind it is the increasing interest of the organizations (profitable and non-profitable) to capture the rural markets and the increasing level of the education and market interface of the rural people. I.T. enabled services are growing at a fast rate and are providing several services to rural people with the common motive of having increase in the connectivity and thus creation of bigger market in the rural areas.  

The increase in the services provided to the rural people (in terms of various services offered) will result in the overall betterment of the society on one side by enriching the people with updated market information and providing latest technological developmental news and organizations on other side by creating more market opportunities for them and adjustment of the market prices.  

For development of the rural areas proper development of the IT Communication and Infrastructural services are essential along with the utilization of the fiber optic networks. I.T. services need to be developed in reference to the present rural infrastructure. Internet based services blended with customer support services should be provided in the rural areas, which can increase the acceptance rate of the services by the rural people.   

            Religion has been an integral part of every culture since the dawn of human civilization; but in the United States today, the fastest growing religious faith is no religion at all.  Various religions have come and gone over time, and some have ballooned up to massive followings that encompassed a significant portion of the entire world.  Our morality, laws, culture and identity have come from a sense of oneness with our faith as a nation; but what happens to our society when we abandon religion altogether?  Drug and alcohol abuse, suicide, serious mental disorders and depression have all been steadily increasing over the same time period that faith has been fading away.  The decline of religion and its practice in the United States over the last few decades has had a detrimental impact on American society as a whole.

            For many years, studies have been performed to find out if religion can make a person live longer.  What they have found, is that religious people live an average of 8 years longer than the population that has no faith ties (5).  There are many reasons attributed to this effect, including stress levels and being part of a community; but the results are the same regardless of the perceived causes.  It also doesn’t matter what the faith being practiced is; Christianity, Judaism, Muslim, Buddhist, even the newer religions like Scientology all yield the same results leading one to question what these people possess that Agnostics and Atheists don’t.  People who do practice a faith will tell you that ‘God’ is sustaining them, but how can this be if they all worship a different higher power?

            Stress levels are an accepted contributing factor that most people can agree on, because a faithful person has a higher sense of peace with the world around them.  When a person believes that a higher power is in charge of the universe, life doesn’t seem quite so chaotic and left to chance.  Tragedies become more a part of natural order, and they are more likely to enjoy the good times in their life because they see them as a gift.  The ‘sense of order’ to the things around them makes life less stressful, and it gives them a place to turn when they have problems in their own life.  People without a religious faith usually see life as a series of tragedies with intermittent periods of boredom and stagnation.

            Religious people tend to be a part of much larger community, with many friends they see at church on a weekly basis.  This large support system can also be considered a contributing factor to religious people living longer.  There are lots of social clubs and other events that Agnostics and Atheists can belong to, but nothing quite carries the same weight as a church group that meets regularly through a person’s entire life.  There are several variables that could explain the longevity of the religious faithful, but many of those variables can’t be substituted with other activities and they don’t provide the sense of peace that having faith does.

            All these things add up to a healthier lifestyle for those who practice a faith, and this also has effects outside the longevity issue.  The occurrence of social problems like drug and alcohol abuse, suicide and depression go down with the introduction of faith in a person’s life (7).  Again; the causes have a lot to do with a sense of peace, community and a place to turn when they experience problems in their life.  Health and longevity are two things that improve with a strong faith, so what happens to society when religion declines throughout the population?

The Decline of Religion

            During the 1960s and 1970s, there were many social changes that took root in the United States.  Evolution began being taught in public schools, and the youth of American began to question the religious values they had been raised with.  The movements in the 60s and 70s weren’t specifically religious in nature, but they did cause the younger generation to rebel against their parents in almost every conceivable way.  As this generation grew up they still had faith in a higher power, but they stopped going to church regularly and that led to the problems with our generation.  Conflicts between emerging science and religion, along with religious values being removed from government and school have led to a serious decline in religious practice.

            The American Religious Identification Survey (2) is conducted every few years and it shows the trends of religious practice in the United States.  Over the last 20 years, almost every religion that is practiced in the U.S. has steadily declined in percentage of the population.  I say ‘almost’ every religion, because Agnostics and Atheists have been growing in leaps and bounds; and these are the two groups that don’t practice a religious faith.  Christians, being by far the largest percentage of the population, have experienced the largest declines; while other religions have only suffered small losses due to their small size to begin with.  According to Adherents (1), this is not a trend happening everywhere in the world; it is centered in highly industrialized nations like the United States.

            Many current Christian faiths in the U.S. claim to be on the rise, and there are pockets of growing faiths that have seen increases.  Non Denominational Christians have in fact grown as the mainstream Christian faiths have begun to dwindle, but the percentage of the population they represent doesn’t come close to covering the losses from the other faiths.  Mormonism believes itself to be the fastest growing religion in the country; however the numbers they pick up closely match the numbers they lose through attrition, leading to a steady population representation that is still falling.  The small portion of the population that practices the eastern religions like Judaism and Muslim, have had some increases and some losses leading to a net loss for the whole group.

            The number of people who now practice no faith at all has quadrupled in percentage of the population over the last 20 years.  This number is troubling for those that believe faith is an essential part of a healthy life, and it doesn’t appear to be a trend that will reverse itself in the near future.  One out of every five people in this country no longer believes in God and doesn’t attend any type of religious institution.  An additional two out of every five people still believes in a higher power, but don’t attend a church; they also no longer place an emphasis on teaching religious values to their children, so the next generation will be even less religious.

The Rise of Social Problems

            During the same 20 year time period that religion has been declining, a number of social afflictions have been steadily increasing.  No one is claiming that the lack of religious faith is the cause of these problems, but it is making them worse.  Without a faith to turn to in times of crisis many people turn to drugs or alcohol and in extreme cases, suicide.  Church goers have a community of supporters to lean on with a collective set of problem solving skills that include a belief that a higher power is watching out for them.  They also rely on a sense of order that things are going the way they are supposed to, even if it doesn’t seem like it at the time.

            Drug and alcohol abuse are problems that have plagued society for hundreds of years, and the instances of these problems waxes and wanes with many different factors.  Some people have a genetic predisposition to addiction that they struggle with their entire lives, but others just abuse these substances when they need an escape from the troubles of everyday life.  Over the last two decades drug and alcohol abuse have steadily increased per capita of the population, according to the Department of Justice (3); while the occurrence of these problems has remained low in the religious portion of the population.  This makes the evidence that the two are linked; quite compelling.  Substance abuse will always be a part of society, no matter what we do to quell it; but the decline of religious values is exaggerating the problem.

            Suicide is the ultimate end game for many people that just cannot deal with the problems in life any longer.  According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, suicide has also been increasing over the last two decades (4); but the link between religion and suicide is even more compelling.  Social problems of all kinds do exist in the religious population, but not to the same degree; and suicide rates among the religious is very low (6).  Religion provides a sense of purpose for most people that goes beyond the short term day to day dilemmas that we all face, and this can help many people disregard suicide as an answer with a long term sense of order.

            Severe mental disorders have exploded in the United States recently (8), and although it’s difficult to say for sure how big religion’s part is; the lack of religion certainly isn’t helping.  The field of mental diagnosis is relatively new and still expanding at a rapid rate.  Twenty years ago, hardly anyone was diagnosed with a mental disorder and no one had even heard of bi-polar.  Today, we have begun to believe that everything wrong with every person is some type of mental problem that can be fixed with a psychologist and some medication.  Depression is a whole different animal, and it has been a known problem for far longer than most others.  The occurrence of depression is also on the rise; and for obvious reasons, religious people struggle with it less than the rest of the population.

Other Problems Without Religion

            Rehabilitation is also an issue with religion declining, especially since the government sees a moral dilemma in directing tax payer funds to a religious based institution.  Programs designed to help people get off drugs and alcohol are far more likely to succeed if they include a belief in a higher power (7).  Secular based rehabilitation just isn’t nearly as successful; and as religion declines, the good rehabilitation programs will become fewer and further between.  Prison rehab also suffers at the loss of religion, with prisoners being less likely to commit crimes after release with a religious backing.  As churches decline, funding for these programs that comes from the parishioners will continue to dry up.

            There are other solutions that we have tried to solve some of the social problems we are currently experiencing, but with limited success.  In the case of depression, pharmaceuticals can be prescribed to help alleviate the symptoms; but they also present a whole slew of additional side effects with unpredictable results.  Most people who take some kind of drug for depression have complaints that the drugs make them feel ‘empty’ and emotionless, while others say they have far worse consequences like suicidal tendencies.  There is a dizzying array of prescriptions available for depression, and a psychiatrist may try several different ones to see how they affect the individuals body chemistry.  Drugs, however, can only mask the symptoms of depression without actually addressing the underlying root causes of the problem.

            Serious mental disorders can also have other possible solutions, but the biggest problem with most mental disorders today is misdiagnosis.  The afflictions of the mind and their causes is still a developing science that will take many more years to work out.  Right now though, the tendency is to diagnose everyone with some type of disorder; and most of them are treated with the same array of pharmaceuticals.  Religion can help to keep a person grounded when they have almost any mental disorder, but like drugs it won’t solve the problem.  Mental disorders present a serious ‘gray area’ in the grand picture of social problems, and now everyone believes they have one.

            Our identity as a nation is deeply rooted in Christian tradition; from the Founding Fathers onward.  The last generation took it for granted that things like Christmas wouldn’t become controversies, and the manger scene would always be a familiar sight on the Capitol steps.  As religion has declined, there has been an increasing assault on everything that has to do with Christianity in the public arena.  With these cultural symbols being removed from society, the stigma has become one of anti religion and it is speeding the process up.  It’s no longer weird to not be a church attendee; now even saying you are Christian in public leads people to a certain conclusion about your mental aptitude.

            Another alternative to modern church attendance is the new ‘mega church’ movement that only requires people to sit in front of their televisions on Sunday mornings.  It’s unclear if this type of worship will affect a person’s overall health, because it doesn’t involve the same sense of community with other parishioners.  Undoubtedly, there will be other forms of faith in the future; maybe even some that evolve through the internet. 

The Connection and the Next Generation

            Religion plays a fundamental part in a person’s health and wellbeing, and that disconnect with the general population is growing at an alarming rate.  Science and religion aren’t enemies, as science explains the ‘how’ and religion explains the ‘why’; but over the last few decades, science has greatly advanced leading people to believe they have to choose between the two.  There is also a growing misconception that the two accomplish the same requirements in a person’s health and wellbeing.  Religion won’t cure a major disease, and science can’t cure everything with drugs; we need both to progress as a complete culture with balance.

            Social problems in the United States are partially based on the religious values we hold, just as every other nation faces various problems based on their religious tendencies.  Many other industrialized countries have declining faiths, and they also have an increasing rate in the social problems described above.  The generations that come after ours will have a whole new set of problems to face; and if religion continues to decline, social problems will continue to rise.  Between the loss of religious values, rising healthcare costs and socialized medicine on the horizon; the next generation may see the first drop in life expectancy in many years.

            On the plus side, religion patterns rise and fall over long periods of time; so 30 or 40 years from now there may be a major religious resurgence.  In the mean time, science will continue to advance with new medications and theories about the mind.  Marriage and divorce rates also fluctuate along the same lines; as do political affiliations, and both of these factors also have a major impact on society as a whole.  We have enjoyed an extending life span and improving health for a very long time, but that time may be coming to an end in the short term.  The trends will reverse themselves eventually, but it will be the next generation that will have to shoulder the majority of the burden we leave behind.

Varying Views and Conclusions

            During the course of my research, I interviewed several people from differing perspectives to gauge the views at opposite ends of the spectrum.  Their opinions on this issue were very telling, and the way they see the future is even more so.  Four individuals representing the various views have been selected and I asked all of them the same set of questions regarding the decline of religion and how it has affected society.  Diane Norquist is a practicing Roman Catholic, Shirley Porter is a non practicing Protestant, Cory Weis is an Agnostic and Jason Pachello is a strong Atheist.

            As a Roman Catholic, Diane believes that religion is the main driving force behind modern civilization; and it’s decline would lead mankind to a very self destructive end.  She surrounds herself with a community of other Catholics and believes that religious values are actually increasing in our society and that the Catholic church is growing in the United States.  “I think many people are going back to church since 9-11, and the values from the 1950s are making a strong comeback”; she told me, “but there is a small group of non-believers who are fighting it”.

            Shirley Porter left the Lutheran church several years ago and began attending ‘tele-church’ on Sunday mornings by watching a mega church broadcast.  She no longer has a community of fellow church goers that she knows personally.  “Religious values are definitely declining, and you can already see the results through civil unrest”; she commented, “things will continue to get worse until the end”.  A very dark view of society, but she still claims to be at peace with herself.

            Agnostics are defined as a group that ‘doesn’t know’ about the existence of God, and they don’t attend a religious institution.  Cory Weis has been an Agnostic his entire life; never having attended a religious service and not being raised with any religious values.  “People can believe whatever they want to believe”; he said, “I don’t think it really has any impact on society”.  He also commented that religious values aren’t increasing or decreasing, but remaining about the same.  His circle of friends just doesn’t talk about religion, so he thinks that it isn’t really a hot topic with anyone.

            Jason Pachello was raised Mormon, but completely rejected religious values many years ago; today he is a strong Atheist that firmly believes God does not exist.  “Religion is a virus that just won’t die because there will always be weak people who need to rely on it”; he told me very passionately, “society would be much better off if we would just abandon this archaic practice”.  Jason also believes that religion is growing out of control, despite science ‘disproving’ the bible and everything else religious.

            People always tend to see the entire world through their own individual circumstances, and the four views here are no exception.  The numbers don’t lie though, religious practice is declining in the United States and it is having an impact on the social problems we are facing.  It’s impossible to say with any certainty what the future holds for the fate of religion or our society in the long term, but things will get worse before they get better.  We used to believe that society would always improve with time as man evolved to a more harmonious state; but without religion that may be impossible.

DETROIT, M.I. – Michigan GMC dealers have a big week ahead of them but it’s not because of a new model debut. As MI Auto Times had reported this is the week that General Motors will be ringing the big bell at the New York Stock Exchange to announce GM stock is now available for purchase.

Michigan GMC dealers as well as Michigan Buick dealers and Michigan Chevrolet dealers all have a big stake in Thursday’s initial public offering. One of the main factors that could directly affect their dealerships’ profits is the government’s current stake in GM. If all goes according to plan and the government reduces its hold in GM from 61 percent to 43 percent, GM gains more freedom to do more for its Michigan GMC dealers since the company will have fewer restrictions from the government.

It’s almost been a year and a half since GM’s bankruptcy and according to The Detroit News, GM CEO Dan Akerson is supposed to ring the bell to announce GM is back. The Detroit News also reported that at one time GM stock was “one of the most traded in the world.”

The planned 365 million shares of common stock being offered are set at an initial price of around to per share, but could increase to or higher. Another factor that will be pushing the price mark higher is China’s SAIC Motor Corp’s interest in GM. ABC News reports SAIC Motor Corp is a company that will be taking a claim in GM’s future if a current deal in negotiations between the two forces is approved.
